Yesterday we received the disturbing letter that the Hot Chemo procedure has been denied for the final time with no further appeals. This has been a long and frustrating 3 months. We first started this process in the beginning of December. Then my school had decided to change insurance companies. So we had to start the process all over again. After about 5 appeals, my oncologist sent the request to the medical review board...which is actually practicing medical doctors reviewing the appeals by the insurance company. The letter stated that this is not a "standard form" of procedure, it's an experimental/investitgational procedure. It's "not likely" to be more beneficial than the "standard therapy" I've already received. How do we progress? How do we block any recurrence? How do we ever cure or help people from this tragic disease if we don't got beyond our standard therapy? Kind of makes you wonder...if my school had not switched insurance companies, would they have ever approved it?
